White Loaves

My first recipe for TWD. This is the “White Loaves” Recipe from the book Baking with Julia.

Now, it’s been quite some time since I have made homemade bread. Don’t get me wrong, I own a bread machine, so that generally makes things easy. But this was a nice change to get more hands on with my bread.

I have to admit, I did make this recipe twice. The first one, I think I was half asleep, because I didn’t put enough yeast in (I read my measuring spoon wrong), so I had to start over. I am not sure how the failed dough will work out though, but I did put in the freezer and may try to make cinnamon rolls or monkey bread with it. So, hopefully, all is not lost and I will get a second treat out of this!!

The white bread was actually very easy and came out beautifully!!!  I even tasted a little this morning, and it was just perfect, even without butter. This may actually start being a staple in the house. The kids are going to try it tonight, so I am anxious to get their reaction.

  1. They look great! Perfect color! I hope the first batch can be turned into something tasty as well. I have so many ‘failed’ dough attempts, but usually you can turn anything into a cinnamon roll. 🙂

  2. hahaha….. That’s sort of what I figured — cinnamon rolls are easy. Around the holidays, we make them using leftover pie crust — a more flaky roll but it still works and the kids love it! Any cinnamon roll is good in my book!!!

  3. I think cinnamon rolls would be perfect too, and your loaves look delicious!

  4. Bummer on the wrong measurements! Glad you enjoyed the bread the scond time around!

  5. looks delish! mine should be out any second. can’t wait!!

  6. You may be able to try letting the other dough rise longer to see if it will still come around!

  7. I am sure you will find something tasty to make with your less than perfect dough. You can still knead in extra yeast if needed (I didn’t catch if you didn’t have enough yeast or too much)

  8. They look like they turned out terrifically! Hope you can salvage the first batch into something – monkey bread sounds good 🙂

  9. I agree with Karen. The recipe had a lot of yeast to start with, so you’re probably okay. just don’t leave it in the freezer TOO long (not all of the yeast cells will recover from a deep freeze). Good luck with cinnamon rolls!

  10. what did your kids think?? If I put the butter (melted), earlier in the recipe, this is easily a bread that I can make regularly since it will be less trouble to knead by hand that way since it takes alot of energy for a preggers!! 🙂 Great job!

  11. How did your kids like the bread? Mine took to dipping it in marinara sauce. (I took to dipping it in chicken broth rather than crackers.)

I definitely think I am going to use the cinnamon bread idea in the future. Really like how easy this is.
